About Desert de les Palmes Natural Park

Desert de les Palmes Natural Park, located near the city of Castellón de la Plana in the Valencian Community of Spain, covers a mountainous area characterized by dramatic limestone cliffs, diverse Mediterranean flora, and cultural landmarks. The park spans approximately 4,769 hectares and features elevations reaching up to 729 meters at the summit of Bartolo Peak. It is named after the abundance of Chamaerops humilis palms ('palmes') mixed with relict populations of native eucalyptus groves introduced centuries ago.

This natural park is a biodiversity hotspot with typical Mediterranean vegetation including pine forests, evergreen shrubs, and scattered cork oaks, providing habitat to various wildlife such as wild boar, rabbits, foxes, and many bird species including peregrine falcons and Bonelli's eagles. The park's geography includes steep ravines, karstic caves, and panoramic coastal views along the Mediterranean Sea.

Historically, Desert de les Palmes derives its name from the former Carmelite monastery (‘desert’ meaning a secluded place for meditation) built in the 17th century and remains a cultural highlight along with several hermitages dotted across the mountains. Visitors enjoy well-developed hiking trails that traverse pine woods, cliffs, and beaches nearby. Rock climbing is popular on the park’s limestone escarpments, while birdwatchers benefit from the varied avian population.

The park's proximity to Castellón and several coastal towns makes it an accessible day-trip destination for nature lovers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a blend of natural beauty, mild Mediterranean climate, and cultural heritage.
